Verbs

Verbs express activity, possibilities and conditions of a person, thing or animal. They tell us what is happening and where.

Types of verbs

There are 5 types of verbsTransitive verbs, Intransitive verbs, Link verbs, Auxiliary verbs, Modal verbs

Verb tenses

When using verbs, we must know how and when to use the different tenses.

English has 12 tenses:

Simple past Past continuous Past perfect Past perfect continuous
Simple present Present continuous Present perfect Present perfect continuous
Simple future Future continuous Future perfect Future perfect continuous

When using tenses, you must know if the verb is regular or irregular.

  • Regular verbs are those whose past simple and past participle are formed by simply adding –ed

  • Irregular verbs are those whose past simple and past participle are formed in different ways, not by adding –ed
