Possessives

Possessives are used with nouns and pronouns in relation to people, countries and animals. They are used to show a relationship of possession.

 

1 – With singular nouns use –‘s; with plural nouns ending in s use – only; with plural nouns not ending in s use –s’

2 – With possessive pronouns do not use an apostrophe, as they already show possession.

3 – Possessive adjectives are used to show something belongs to somebody, for parts of the body, for relations and friends.  It modifies a noun to show ownership.

4 – Possessive question: whose, is used to find out whether something belongs to someone.
