Say the numbers
SMALL NUMBERS (0-999)
For numbers between 0 and 999 do the following:
For numbers between 21 and 99 say number (multiple of 10) + last number
35 = thirty five
82 = eighty two
For numbers between 100 and 999 say first number + ’hundred’ + last two numbers
832 = eight hundred thirty two
564 = five hundred sixty four
LARGE NUMBERS (>999)
When saying large numbers, the following rules apply:
- Use a hyphen to separate (10, 20, 30, etc.) words and (1, 2, 3, etc.) words
- The words thousands, millions, billions, etc. are always used in singular
- Use a comma to separate thousands, millions, etc. in numbers
Numbers between 1,000 and 999,999 = thousand
Say (number+’thousand’)+(number+’hundred’)+number
23,824 = twenty-three thousand eight hundred and twenty-four
Numbers between 1,000 and 9,900 that end in 00 say first two numbers+’hundred’
2,100 = twenty one hundred
Numbers between 1,000,000 and 999,999,999 = million
Say (number+’million’)+(number+’thousand’)+(number+’hundred’)+number
132,425,301 = one hundred thirty-two million four hundred twenty-five thousand three hundred and one
Numbers between 1,000,000,000 and 999,999,999,999 billion
Say (number+’million’)+(number+’thousand’)+(number+’hundred’)+number
205,325,408,560 = two hundred five billion three hundred twenty-five million four hundred eight thousand five hundred and sixty
… and so on
