Comparatives

Comparatives are always used to compare two things.  They show the superiority, inferiority, or equality of one term compared to another. The two basic ways to compare are:  

[…. than], used to show the superiority or inferiority of one term compared to another.  In this case, some changes in the adjective are necessary, depending on the number of syllables the adjective has.

– For adjectives that are just one syllable, add -er to the end

 

– For two-syllable adjectives not ending in -y and for all three-or-more-syllable adjectives, use the form “more + unchanged adjective”

 

– For two-syllable adjectives ending in -y, change the -y to -i and add -er

 

– If the adjective ends with ‘single vowel + consonant’, double the consonant and add ‘–er’

 

– Some very common adjectives have irregular comparatives

 

– To express inferiority use “less… than”, no matter how many syllables de adjective has

 

[as .. as], used to show the equality or inequality of one term compared to another.  In this case the adjective does not change.In order to say that two things are the same use ’as’+adjective+‘as’

 

– In order to say that two things are not the same use ’not as’+adjective+’as’
