Superlatives

Superlatives are not used to compare two things, but to talk about one thing and how it is the best, the worst, etc.

The following rules apply to the superlative:

– Form the superlative of a one-syllable adjective by adding –est

 

– If the adjective ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant, double the last consonant in the superlative + est

 

– For 2-syllable adjectives ending in -y, change the -y to –iest

 

– For other 2-syllable adjectives, use the most or the least with the unchanged adjective

 

– Adjectives with 3 or more syllables, use the most or the least with the unchanged adjective

 

– There are irregular adjectives that you have to memorize because they don’t follow the rules. They are:
